Why did you choose to work in social care?
Following a move from North to south in 1989 I felt ready for new pastures I started to work in a hospital environment as a care assistant then went on to college here in Oxford in social work/care management.
What was your first role in social care?
I started as a night care assistant with a care agency whilst studying at college.
What is your role?
I work as a Care Support Worker for Oxfordshire Crossroads Care.
We help: The Elderly Children with Learning Disabilities, Children & Families, Mental Health, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and clients with Disabilities.
What does your role involve?
A normal day would be to be involved with personal care in accordance with the care plan. I administer medication, support meal preparation and household tasks.
I also spend time accessing community facilities, go shopping with my clients, and support them in meeting up with friends.
Speaking with the family GP and other networks involved to provide a safe environment and to provide emotional support to the family as part of their care.
